CONFIRMATION STUDENTS TO RECEIVE
THE SACRAMENT
(May 2010)- During the 5:30 PM Mass on Sunday, May 30, 2010, Bishop Gabino Zavala will confirm
35 teens and 4 adults at St. Luke the Evangelist. The ceremony confirms that these candidates are adults in the
Catholic Community. The Sacrament of Confirmation finalizes the Christian Initiation that began at Baptism.
--
Each candidate, along with their sponsor, will
stand before the Bishop and state their name and be anointed with the Chrism. Candidates may choose to use
their Baptismal name or choose a Confirmation name, after a recognized saint of their choice. The use of the Baptismal
name better confirms the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation. In addition, the ceremony includes a renewal
of the Baptismal Promises. This year the candidates will wear white gowns to symbolize th beginning of their
adult journey.
--
The teens have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation for
the past two years. Each student has been required to attend weekly classes, submit reflective journals, attend one
retreat each year, submit a report on a ministry and a saint of their interest, and perform community service. Topics
that have been covered in clsses over the past two years include: the history of the Church, Catholic beliefs and practices,
death and morality, human sexuality, justice and service, the Creed, the media, substance abuse, and self-esteem.

It has been an exciting spiritual
journey to get to this point! As their are confirmed, they will be beginning their lifelong spiritual journey as adults
in the faith community. The Confirmation ceremony itself is not a form of graduation, but it marks the beginning of
their contribution to our Church and society as Catholic adults.
--
Similarly, the adults receiving Confirmation have
undergone a spiritual journey of their own. For the past eight months, they have been attending weekly classes in a
similar fashion to the teens. Instead their preparation was a more condensed version directed towards adults.

We congratulate all of the Confirmation
Candidates and their sponsors for taking an active role in their faith and choosing to be Confirmed. We welcome you
as adults to the Catholic Community! Below are some photos of our candidates and sponsors.
