Serving as an Altar Server
Serving as an altar server is a very humble experience for the young men and women of the parish.  As an altar server, one is able to actively participate in the Mass on the Altar.  An altar server is truly a member of the Assembly.

Altar servers assist during both the Liturgy of the Word and Liturgy the Eucharist with reverence.  Among the many duties of an altar server include preparing the Eucharist table for the Breaking of the Bread.

Servers also carry the cross and the processional candles, carry the incense and censor, present the bread, wine and water to the priest during the Preparation of the Gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, and wash the hands of the priest.

Servers have played a role in the Eucharist Celebration since the early centuries and altar servers represent an ancient tradition in the liturgical experience.

In the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, both men and women, young and old, may server as altar servers during the Mass.  Young women began serving at St. Luke Parish over 10 years ago.  In the past, this ministry has been a source of vocations for the church.  An altar server has received the Sacrament of Baptism and Eucharist.

Altar servers have specified dates to assist with the Mass according to a rotary schedule.  Training is provided for those who are interested.
