FISH DINNERS HIT THE SPOT!
(March 2008)- This past Friday was the last of six Lenten Fish Dinners hosted by the Knights of Columbus Council #9128 at St. Luke Church.  These fish dinners have been a long standing tradition in the parish for around 20 years and are a success each year.
During Lent each year, Catholics are called to abstain from eating meat on Fridays.  In light of this, the Knights of Columbus at our parish have been serving these dinners each Lent, and the dinners continuously hit the spot!  This is evident from the long line of parishioners and citizens of Temple City that hungrily wait before each dinner. The most people served during this cycle of Fish Dinners was 299!

The dinners are every Friday during Lent, except Good Friday, in the Parish Hall from 5:30 -7:00 P.M.  For the past five years, the menu has included the choice of Baked Fish, Salmon, Mahi Mahi or Fried Fish, usually Cod.  The fish is served with a steaming hot baked potato, a variety of two vegetables, cole slaw, a dinner roll, and your choice of many delectable desserts.  The first to run out is usually the Salmon, and the most popular dessert each year is the strawberry shortcake, whcih is served at the last Fish Dinner.  Drinks include punch, water, and coffee.  Wine, beer, and sodas may be purchased as well.

The group orders around 30 to 35 pounds of each fish and they begin their preparations on Wednesdays with some help from ladies in the church choir.  On Thursdays, they prepare all of the vegetables and anything else to help their productivity on Friday, which is strictly cooking.  The Knights, their wives, and some of our priests serve the food at each dinner.  The Squires and school children are most often at these dinners trying to earn their required service hours.

The Knights have an ongoing raffle of multiple prizes with the winners revealed at the last fish dinner.  Council #9128 uses all proceeds from the Fish Dinners for charities at St. Luke Parish, focusing to keep the money in the parish.  This is definitely a fundraiser not be missed next time around and is guaranteed to hit the spot!
