• San Antonio
Boys Home
The history of Rancho San Antonio dates back to 1933, when the Catholic Big Brothers recognized the
need for such an agency where boys with problems might solve them under proper guidance. Later, facilities were acquired
in Griffith Park, but these quarters also became too limited. The present location at 21000 Plummer Street, in Chatsworth,
was purchased by the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and officially opened on June 20, 1938.
In 1953, The Cardinal
requested that the Brothers of Holy Cross assume direct supervision of the Rancho.
Since its inception in 1933, Rancho
San Antonio has provided a home for over 7000 boys. These boys at Rancho are admitted only upon the recommendation from
recognized social agencies and after personal interviews with the boy. There are no walls or fences—the boy must
be willing to accept his need for placement and be willing to participate.
The several chapters of the Knights of Columbus
have adopted the Rancho as one of its charities. The K of C Rancho fund drive, together with the annual BBQ, has raised
an average of $60,000..00 annually to help in maintenance of this facility.
• Free Throw Basketball Competition
The last weekend in January kicks off the annual “Free Throw” basketball competition. This consists
of contests at the council level, district/chapter level, with the finalists competing in the Fresno State event in March.
Boys and girls ages 8 through 14 are invited to this event. There are five age divisions, boys compete against
boys, girls against girls. The championship follows the standard rules for basketball free throw at all levels of competition.
There are trophy awards, but no cash or savings bonds, since that would violate the amateur rules.
Each contestant
receives three warm-up shots. At the council level, contestants get 15 free throw attempts; at District, Regional
or Jurisdictional level competition, contestants get 25 free throw attempts. St Luke basketball courts have hosted several
competitions both for the council, and for the Chapter.
• Order of Alhambra
Many members
of the Knights of Columbus also support the Order of Alhambra, a Catholic men's organization dedicated to help the mentally
handicapped.
• Free Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens of St. Luke Church
Each November,
the “Senior Citizens” of the parish are feted with a Thanksgiving dinner feast - at no charge.
The dinner is livened up with entertainment, and prizes are given out which were donated by the parishioners.
•
Lenten Fish Fry Dinners
The Knights and families get a workout during the six Fridays of Lent, with the well
received fish fry dinners. Proceeds are for the various ministries in the parish, and abroad. An average of 300
dinners are served each Friday. Many ministries benefit from proceeds from this event especially.
• “ID” (Intellectually Disabled) Drive Marian Homes Project
This “I.D.”
Drive (known as the “Tootsie Roll Drive”) has helped support the Marian Homes in the San Gabriel Valley for the
Physically Handicapped and Developmentally Disabled. The purpose of the Marian Homes is to establish and maintain a place
of residence for adult children when their parents can no longer take care of them. The homes were incorporated in 1986
by a group of Catholic parents who posed just this question - they foresaw the need for a home where spiritual
and emotional needs would be met - where a homelike atmosphere for these residents rather than an institution
where there are few opportunities for development.
Knights, and members of their families, wearing the familiar orange
vests and a supply of Tootsie Rolls, welcome donations from parishioners during one weekend in October, the proceeds of which
go to this Chapter Charities project.
